The lure of the devil

The devil is probably the most recurrent presence in the legends all over Europe. The evil forces are often symbolized by devils and sometimes by monsters which can anyway be regarded as further pictures of evil and they challenge human beings, even saints, in order to work evil and gain souls for the kingdom of hell. The travel starts from Milan, where Saint Ambrogio faced the temptation by Satan and managed to defeat him. Saint Galgano is another Italian saint who did not fall in temptation, but remained faithful to his hermit and poor life. The travel then moves to other countries. We learn about Mr Twardowsky who tricks the devil himself with a witty stratagem and about other human beings and their encounter with the prince of hell.
